One day a baby is left on the doorstep of cruel Burgermeister Meisterburger (Paul Frees), who rules Sombertown. The only clue to the baby’s heritage is a note reading “Claus”. The Burgermeister doesn’t want the baby. On the way to the orphan asylum, the sled carrying the baby is blown away, and the baby ends up being taken in by the Kringle family who names him Kris (Mickey Rooney). The Kringles used to be the official toymakers of the king, but the Burgermeister has put an end to toys. When Kris grows up he offers to take toys to the children in Sombertown. There he meets Jessica (Robie Lester), gives toys to the children, and is chased from town by the Burgermeister. On the way home Kris runs into the Winter Warlock (Keenan Wynn) and melts his icy heart with a toy. Jessica contacts Kris telling him the children want more toys. He delivers them by sneaking down chimneys. The Burgermeister has the toys burned, and Kris becomes a wanted fugitive. Realizing that he’s become a danger to the Kringle name, he adopts the name “Claus”. He and Jessica marry and establish a home at the North Pole.
